When renting an apartment, flat, or hotel room, you'll notice a few differences between Italian spaces and American ones. I'll list a few most notable.

Where's the Closet?

Laying the suitcase flat on the bed, you turn about the room and notice a huge wardrobe fit for C.S. Lewis, but no closet. There is a reason for this: most spaces in Italy are very old. When they were first built, there was a tax on each room; the closet was counted as an extra room. Therefore, you will still find large wardrobes that take the place of closets in most Italian homes/hotels. In truth, I never noticed a single closet in the number of Italian households, three apartments, and handful of hotels I visited.

Don't Italians Bathe?

Another notable difference is the absence of the bathtub. Oh, a few places will have them, but it is a recent addition. If your hotel doesn't have a shower down the hall, it will have a small one attached to your room. I found hot showers a good way to warm up before the heat was turned on in October. All of my apartments had a shower, each hotel had one. Only one house I visited had a bathtub--and it was very small.

Note: in some places there is limited amount of hot water--learned that the hard way with a head full of shampoo. Before enjoying that nice hot shower, first take a 'test' shower the day before to see when (or if) the hot water runs out.
